Education and literacy was one of the goals of the India's freedom movement and Mahatma Gandhi, even while leading the epic struggle against colonial power, evolved an alternative, community based system of education- Nai Basic Taleem. India inherited an educational system, which was quantitatively small and was characterized by striking regional and structural imbalances. For a literate population and universal education for all children provision was defined and delineated in the Constitution as well as in successive five year plans.
