DOODY'S BOOK REVIEW
REVIEWER'S EXPERT OPINION
Patricia Wong, MD(Stanford University Medical Center)
This is an introduction to dermatologic surgery and aesthetic procedures employing lasers, chemical peels, Botox injections, dermal fillers, etc. The authors are all based in India, so the book has a strong focus on treating darker skin types. Unique elements include contact information for all authors (emails and addresses), detailed vendor contact information (which are all located in India), and chapters dealing with topics not usually discussed in standard dermatologic surgery textbooks, such as removal of subcutaneous leprosy nodules and how to perform circumcisions.
This is intended to function as a comprehensive surgical reference for all procedures a dermatologist could perform.
The audience is dermatologists and dermatology students and residents.
The book covers a wide variety of procedures, with most chapters beginning with a discussion of fundamental principles followed by numerous color photographs showing the procedures being performed at various stages to accompany the text. There are some curious points that I am sorry the authors did not elaborate upon. Handyplast is recommended as a topical agent for use after CO2 laser resurfacing, but no mention is made as to the product's composition. The chapter on varicose veins lists Western style toilets as a possible aggravating factor, but does not specify what the mechanics are that are causing venous insufficiency. What kind of toilet design is most desirable for remedying this condition? One is left to speculate. There is a good explanation of how local anesthesia works on blocking sodium channels. The surgical chapter on needles gives a nice description of the different types of surgical needles with good diagrams.
Overall, this book would be useful to give the budding dermatologic surgeon a broad overview of all procedures in the field. Basic principles, risks, and the general techniques involved are outlined nicely. For the most part, one would need to consult a specialty book on the individual procedures to be confident enough to attempt these therapies.
